Description

This is an illustration I've been working on to be a part of a card game with the Ancient Mexican Cosmology and its deities as a theme.

Itztlacoliuhqui-Ixquimilli ('Curved Obsidian Blade' in nahuatl language) is the deity of frost, cold, ice and 'blind-folded justice' in the Ancient Mexican Cosmology. To him were attributed ills and he was revered with fear. History has it that he's previously been Tlahuizcalpantecuhtli ('Lord of the Morning Star' - Lord of the Dawn, Venus as the Morning Star), who rebelled against Nanahuatzin/Tonatiuh, the Sun God of the Fifth Sun Era, who had deemed the sacrifice of other gods as necessary to keep the sun moving and life existing. Tlahuizcalpantecuhtli shot a dart with his atlatl ('spear thrower') on Tonatiuh, but the hegemonic sun god, who was shortly before a humble one (before his sacrifice and rebirth, as Nanahuatzin), has evaded it and in turn attacked and hit the Lord of the Morning Star, who, falling upon the earth became the God of Frost and 'blind-folded justice'. In the Tonalpohualli ('Day-Count'), Itztlacoliuhqui rules over the trecena (period of thirteen days) Cuetzpalin (lizard).

Tlahuizcalpantecuhtli/Itztlacoliuhqui's history of rebellion, resistance and punishment draws parallels from other deities and cosmological comprehensions such as the romanticizing of Lucifer's fall (Lucifer meaning light bearer and being identified with the Morning Star, just like Tlahuizcalpantecuhtli) and becoming Satan (which means 'the adversary' [in relation to the hegemonic god] - Lucifer and Satan are different characters with different roles that appear at different times and translations, but made into one by the christian institution, which has since then used it as an allegory to autonomy, self-management and thinking, and how it is dangerous to the control which the christian faith implies over the individuals).

Tlahuizcalpantecuhtli is also related and seen by some as an aspect of Quetzalcoatl, the Feathered Serpent.

Soon enough I'll post other illustrations from this card game and the complete card game. You can check other of my Mexican deities here:

SIMPLEMENTE HERMOSO, es de reconocerse porque muy pocos se interesan en darle vida a nuestras deidades prehispánicas. Me autorizas utilizar esta imagen en un video educativo? De ser como respuesta un "si" dime como te pongo en los créditos, gracias!
